Saturday, May 18, started out with our usual “Corvette Breakfast” at the Cocky Rooster with seven members attending.
However, that’s where the “usual” came to a screeching halt!! About noon we converged on Sunshine Lanes in DeLand for our Charity Tournament. We had over a dozen members but only eight who chose to bowl. We did have a great line up of eight Corvettes also and enrolled another new member who bowls on Suzy’s league. Welcome Ed.
I don’t think anyone who was there would argue the fact that we had more fun with way more laughter than at any event in our 10 year history. Let’s just say the gutters are much cleaner than before.
There was gutter ball (after gutter ball), some spares and a (very) few strikes. Buzz actually made the 7-10 split…yup, he made the 7 on his first ball and the 10 on his second ball. So we all got to witness history, kinda.
The highlight of this event was the fierce competition between Buzz and Mike D. It all got started when Buzz (a lefty) decided to use Mike’s (house) ball, fit for a righty. The results of this were hysterical. This epic battle went on frame after frame with both being cheered on by an enthusiastic throng of onlookers.
This continued for nine frames with Mike holding a slight advantage. Tension mounted in the 10th frame when Buzz needed a mark (a rare thing) plus pin count to take the lead. The crowd erupted when Buzz threw a strike. But there was still the matter of pin count. Buzz did defeat Mike by the narrowest of margins but by doing so, Mike got the trophy. Yes, the much sought after “Highest Handicap Award”. A.K.A. lowest score.
The award winners were; Suzy & Ed, High Series with Chris & Mike with High Handicap. Everyone who bowled donated more than their pledge and all non-bowlers donated as well. The 50/50 was for $70.00, won by Chuck who returned his winnings to the Club. Chuck & Chris also donated the extravagant trophies. The final tally was $382.66. Another successful event, thank you V.C.C.A.
After the excitement died down we all went to the DeLand Car Show, found a place in the shade and enjoyed an afternoon of cars and friendship. This was, of course, followed by a great meal at Tony’s Pizza on New York Ave,
